Why Your Stainless Steel Shearing Blades Need Superior Metallurgy?

Why Material Choice Matters for Stainless Steel Shearing?

Shearing stainless steel is hard for any fabrication shop. It has high tensile strength and tends to work-harden, so standard blades won’t work. To get clean, precise cuts and make blades last longer, you need blades made specifically for stainless steel.

Key Factors for Success

  • Metallurgy Matters: Standard carbon steel blades get dull fast on stainless steel. Our blades use high-quality alloys like Cr12MoV (SKD11) or H13, heated in a deep vacuum to balance toughness and edge retention.

  • Hardness vs. Toughness: Harder blades aren’t always better. Too hard, and they chip; too soft, and they get dull. Choose based on the material you’re cutting and how heavy the load is.

  • Heat Treatment: Good materials need proper quenching and tempering to work their best. This brings out their wear resistance and toughness.

  • Fight Heat and Friction: Cutting stainless steel creates lots of heat. We design our blades to reduce friction, preventing damage to both the blade and the workpiece.

  • Prevent Sticking: For sticky materials (stainless steel, titanium alloy, aluminum, copper), use Cr12MoV or SKD11. These blades stop sticking and chipping, making cutting faster and better.

  • Precision Gap Settings: Stainless steel needs a tighter blade gap than mild steel. Our blades are made with tiny precision, so you can adjust for burr-free cuts.

  • Cost Efficiency: Specialized blades cost more upfront, but they last longer and reduce waste. This saves money in the long run, especially for high-volume work.

Our High-Performance Blades (For Stainless Steel)

At Alas Machinery, our blades are built to handle stainless steel’s challenges. Below are the top materials we use, with theirchemical composition, key properties, and uses.

1. Cr12MoV / SKD11 (High Carbon High Chromium Alloy Tool Steel)

  • Chemical Composition: C 1.40-1.60%, Cr 11.00-13.00%, Mo 0.40-0.60%, V 0.15-0.30%

  • Key Properties: Great wear resistance and hardenability; medium toughness; little deformation after heat treatment; long service life

  • Hardness: HRC 58-60 (after heat treatment)

  • Best For: Cutting stainless steel (all thicknesses), low carbon steel, Q235, aluminum, and copper

2. H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) Hot Work Die Steel

  • Chemical Composition: C 0.32-0.45%, Cr 4.75-5.50%, Mo 1.10-1.75%, Si 0.80-1.20%, V 0.80-1.20%

  • Key Properties: Excellent high-temperature strength; good impact toughness; resists thermal fatigue; stays hard and strong in high heat

  • Hardness: HRC 50-55 (after heat treatment)

  • Best For: Cold cutting stainless steel thick plates; hot cutting strip steel, thick plates, and high-strength alloy steel

3. D2 (American Standard High Carbon High Chromium Steel)

  • Chemical Composition: C 1.40-1.60%, Cr 11.50-13.50%, Mo 0.70-1.20%, V 0.50-1.00%

  • Key Properties: Far better wear resistance and hardenability than ordinary alloy steel; strong anti-deformation; excellent chipping resistance

  • Hardness: HRC 58-62 (after heat treatment)

  • Best For: Cutting stainless steel, medium/low hardness steel (Q195/Q235/45#/40Cr), aluminum, copper, and non-metallic materials

4. LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si) Cold Work Die Steel

  • Chemical Composition: C 0.65-0.75%, Cr 6.50-7.50%, Mo 1.80-2.20%, V 1.80-2.20%, Si 0.80-1.20%

  • Key Properties: High strength and toughness; vanadium and molybdenum refine grain; great wear resistance; very strong chipping resistance

  • Hardness: HRC 58-62 (after heat treatment)

  • Best For: Cutting hard-to-shear stainless steel, high-strength steel, thick plates; used for large hydraulic and heavy CNC shearing machines

Simple Blade Selection Guide (Stainless Steel)

  • Light stainless steel / medium strength steel: Choose SKD11 or D2 (balances wear resistance and chipping resistance)

  • Stainless steel thick plates / hard-to-shear stainless steel: Choose H13 or LD (handles heavy loads and tough materials)

Stop struggling with dull blades and bad cuts. Upgrade to our high-performance blades made for stainless steel. At Alas Machinery, our blades combine great metallurgy, smart design, and precise manufacturing—for clean cuts, longer blade life, and lower costs. Tackle stainless steel shearing with confidence.
