Press Brake Tooling (Bending Machine dies) Guide

Press brake tooling are dedicated forming tools paired with bending machines. As core parts for sheet metal bending, they consist of upper and lower tooling. When the machine slide moves against the worktable, metal sheets get pressed between two tooling. The material bends into set angles and shapes like right angle, U shape and V shape. These tooling serve widely in machinery manufacturing, sheet metal fabrication, hardware and cabinet making. We supply solid CNC press brake tooling and practical bending solutions for daily production.

Core Parts & Working Principle

Upper Tooling

It fixes on the moving slide and acts as the pressing part.
Different designs including straight edge, sharp corner, gooseneck and arc decide the final bending shape. We supply tough 4140 press brake punches for long time stable use.

Lower Tooling

It stays fixed on the worktable to hold work pieces.
V type groove is the main structure. Groove width directly affects bending force, corner size and finished appearance.

How It Works

  1. Lay metal sheet flat on lower tooling

  2. Upper tooling presses down steadily

  3. Material forms permanent bend following tooling contour

  4. Stop pressing once reaching required depth and pressure

  5. Lift upper tooling and take out finished product

Product Features

Common Product Types

Classed by bending shape

  • Straight edge tooling: Basic choice for regular flat bending

  • Sharp angle tooling: Used for narrow angle bending and springback adjustment

  • Gooseneck tooling: Ideal for deep U groove work, avoids collision during processing

  • Arc tooling: Makes round corners and curved parts

  • Special shape tooling: Produced according to customer drawings

Classed by processed material

  • Standard sheet metal tooling: Suits low carbon steel and galvanized steel, cost effective

  • High strength steel tooling: Thickened body fits stainless steel and hard alloy plate

  • Thin plate tooling: Fine machining prevents scratch, warp and deformation

Classed by installation style

  • Amada style press brake tooling: Compatible with Amada and Promecam equipment

  • Trumpf & Wila type: Matches corresponding brand bending machines

  • Universal standard type: Works with most local bending devices

Practical Tooling Selection Tips

1. Match raw material property

Mild steel bounces slightly. Use 86° to 88° punch for standard 90 degree bend.
Stainless steel and high strength steel have obvious rebound. Choose 85° punch to correct angle deviation.
42CrMo press brake tooling is the mainstream material, balanced toughness and hardness after heat treatment.

2. Follow 8 times thickness rule

  • Sheet 3mm to 8mm thick: V groove width equals 8 times material thickness

  • Sheet under 3mm: Set groove width as 6 times thickness for neat small corner

  • Sheet over 8mm: Adopt 10 to 12 times thickness, cut down bending force to protect tooling

3. Keep safe pressure range

Calculate required pressure based on material thickness, tensile strength and groove size. Leave 10% to 15% safety margin, never run press brake tooling over rated load. Use thickened or split tooling for thick and hard plates.

4. Pick proper punch style

Standard punch handles common bending jobs. Sharp angle punch fits precision angle work. Gooseneck punch and V tooling suit deep groove parts. Arc and irregular punches apply to curved and special shaped work pieces.

5. Check machine compatibility

Select matching mounting type including Amada style press brake tooling, Trumpf type and universal standard type. Confirm tooling height and slide travel before installation for smooth assembly and precise positioning.

Daily Use Notes

Take material springback into account to keep accurate bending angle.
Stick to thickness matching rule to avoid plate crack and tooling breakage.
Verify installation size to prevent assembly problems.
We supply durable 4140 press brake punches, sturdy 42CrMo press brake tooling and precise CNC press brake tooling, offering tailored bending solutions for different production needs.

42CrMo Press Brake Tooling: FAQ

Q: Why pick 42CrMo instead of 45# carbon steel?

A: 42CrMo, equivalent to AISI 4140, belongs to premium alloy steel. Containing chromium, molybdenum and manganese elements, it boasts obvious advantages.
It delivers superior hardness and wear resistance, solid strength and toughness, stable bearing capacity under heavy pressure, and longer service lifespan in actual working scenarios.
45# carbon steel features low hardness, fast abrasion and easy deformation under pressure. 42CrMo maintains stable mechanical performance and original shape, perfectly suited for press brake tooling production.

Q: Does 42CrMo conform to international material norms?

A: It corresponds to multiple mainstream global material grades.
AISI 4140 for American standard, 42CrMo4 / 1.7225 for European and German standard, SCM440 for Japanese standard. This material is widely adopted to manufacture high grade press brake tooling across the globe.

Q: What is the hardness level of 42CrMo tooling?

A: Key working areas including punch tips and groove shoulders undergo professional hardening process. The finished hardness ranges from 47 to 52 HRC.
The treated surface effectively resists daily wear, while inner material retains good toughness to prevent cracking under impact force.

Q: What is the depth of hardening layer?

A: Deep induction hardening technology is applied, with effective hardened depth reaching 3 to 5mm on working surface.
Compared with ordinary surface hardening, the tool can be reground repeatedly without losing hardness property.

Q: Is the tooling applicable for high tonnage bending work?

A: 42CrMo material fits bending work above 100 tons perfectly. It will not deform or get permanently damaged when processing thick plates and hard materials such as stainless steel.

Q: Can the tooling match existing machine clamping structure?
