High-Precision Compound Dies in Modern Sheet Metal Bending

In precision sheet metal work, press brake compound dies directly affect bending accuracy.Unlike standard single-V dies, compound / multi-V dies are more flexible.They cut down tool change time and make production faster.

1. Parts & How Press Brake Tooling Works

Upper Die

  • Mounted on the moving part of the bending machine

  • Applies downward pressure

  • Its shape (straight, sharp, gooseneck, arc, etc.) decides the outer shape of the bent part

Lower Die

  • Fixed on the machine table

  • Usually has a V-shaped groove

  • V-groove width affects bending force, bend radius, and final shape

How It Works

  1. Put the metal sheet on the lower die

  2. The upper die presses down

  3. The metal bends and keeps its new shape

  4. When the set pressure and distance are reached, bending is done

  5. Upper die moves back; you can take out the finished part

3. Types of Press Brake Tooling

By Shape

  • Standard straight dies: for general bending (most common)

  • Sharp-angle dies: for small angles or fixing springback

  • Gooseneck dies: for U-shaped and deep parts (avoids hitting bent edges)

  • Arc dies: for rounded bends

  • Irregular dies: custom-made for special parts

By Material Use

  • Standard dies: for mild steel, galvanized steel (low cost)

  • High-strength dies: for stainless steel, hard alloys (thicker, harder)

  • Thin-material dies: prevents bending marks and warping

By Machine Interface

  • Amada / Promecam type: fits Amada machines

  • Trumpf / Wila type: fits Trumpf and Wila

  • New Standard type: works with most Chinese-made machines

4. How to Choose the Right Tooling

① Match the Metal Material

  • Different metals bend back differently (springback)

    • Mild steel: little springback

    • Stainless steel & high-strength steel: strong springback

  • Choose die angle to fix springback and avoid cracking

② Follow the “8x Rule” for V-Groove

  • Basic rule: V width = 8 × material thickness

  • Thin material (under 3mm): use V = 6×T

  • Thick material (over 8mm): use V = 10×T to 12×T

③ Do Not Exceed Machine Pressure

  • Calculate bending tonnage before use

  • Never overload dies — this breaks tools and machines

  • Leave 10%–15% safety margin

④ Choose the Right Punch Shape

  • Standard punch: general bending

  • Sharp punch: small angles

  • Gooseneck punch: deep U-shaped parts

  • Arc / custom punch: round or special shapes

⑤ Match the Bending Machine

  • Check shank / clamping type

  • Make sure die height fits machine stroke

  • Wrong fit causes installation failure or low efficiency

5. Important Tips When Choosing Tooling

  • Always consider springback, or angles will be wrong

  • Follow the 8x rule to avoid cracking parts and breaking dies

  • Make sure the die fits your machine
