The Science of Sharpness: Choosing the Right Metal Shear Blade for Your Shop

In metalworking, the quality of your shear blades directly affects the precision of your finished parts. Dull or low-quality blades cause:
  • Distorted sheet edges

  • Damage to your shearing machine’s hydraulic system

To boost productivity and cut downtime, match your blade material to your processing needs.

1. Material Selection

Use the right steel grade for your sheet metal to get clean, consistent cuts. Below are the most common blade materials and their uses.

Blade Materials & Details

9CrSi Alloy Tool Steel

  • Key Traits: Hard, wear-resistant, balanced performance, low cost, most widely used

  • Hardness: HRC 58–60 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Thin cold-rolled sheet, galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, leather

6CrW2Si Alloy Tool Steel

  • Key Traits: Tungsten/silicon alloy, stays hard at high temps, harder/stronger than 9CrSi, less likely to chip

  • Hardness: HRC 60–62 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Hot shearing, light stainless steel, medium-strength steel

Cr12MoV / SKD11 Steel

  • Key Traits: Very wear-resistant, easy to harden, little distortion after heat treatment, long life

  • Hardness: HRC 58–60 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Low-carbon steel (all thicknesses), Q235, aluminum, copper, thin mild steel

H13 Hot Work Die Steel

  • Key Traits: Strong at high temps, tough, resists heat fatigue, no softening/deformation

  • Hardness: HRC 50–55 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Hot shearing (strip steel, thick plate), cold shearing (high-strength alloy, thick stainless steel)

D2 (American Standard)

  • Key Traits: High carbon/chromium, very wear-resistant, hard to deform, no chipping

  • Hardness: HRC 58–62 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Medium-low hardness plates (Q195/Q235/45# steel, 40Cr), aluminum, copper, brass, non-metallics (plastic, rubber, paper)

LD Cold Work Die Steel

  • Key Traits: High strength/toughness, fine grain (vanadium/molybdenum), very wear-resistant, no chipping

  • Hardness: HRC 58–62 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: High-strength steel, thick plate, stainless steel, large hydraulic/CNC shears

Powder Metallurgy Steel (ASP23, ASP60)

  • Key Traits: Made via powder metallurgy, ultra-hard (HRC 62–65+), very wear-resistant, stable performance

  • Uses: High-precision shearing, heavy-duty/high-frequency operations (long life needed)

2. Precision Grinding & Straightness

Top-quality blades need to be flat, not just hard. Our blades meet these standards:
  • Flatness Control: Straightness error ≤ 0.02mm (even for multi-meter blades) via precision grinding

  • Optimal Clearance: Proper gap reduces heat, creates smooth cuts, no need for secondary polishing

3. How to Choose the Right Blade

  • General carbon steel (Q195, Q235): 9CrSi or Cr12MoV (low cost, reliable)

  • Medium-low hardness steel, aluminum/copper (45#, 40Cr, brass): SKD11 or D2 (wear-resistant, long life)

  • Light stainless steel, medium-strength steel: SKD11 or D2 (balances wear resistance and anti-chipping)

  • Thick stainless steel, high-strength alloys: H13 or LD (tough, no fracture)

  • Hot shearing (strip steel, thick plate): H13 or H13K (resists heat softening)

  • High-precision, heavy-duty shearing: Powder metallurgy (ASP23/ASP60) (longest life, best precision)

4. Extend Blade Life: Tips

  • Rotate Blades: Most blades have 2–4 cutting edges. Flip them regularly to double their use.

  • Adjust Clearance: Change the blade gap based on sheet thickness to avoid chipping.

  • Lubricate Blades: Proper lubrication reduces wear by 15% and keeps blades sharp.

Important Notes

  • Harder is not better: Balance hardness and toughness. Too hard = chipping; too soft = dulling.

  • Heat treatment matters: Even good materials need professional quenching/tempering to work well.

  • Sticky materials (stainless steel, aluminum, copper): Use Cr12MoV or SKD11 to prevent sticking/chipping.

Mechanical blades are (special wearing parts) due to different cutting products, correct and reasonable selection of materials, heat treatment hardness, grinding accuracy, packaging requirements. Please contact us before purchase and confirm whether the blade specifications materials you need are available goods.

Our quality: All mechanical parts, tools, and molds are manufactured in-house. Upon arrival at our warehouse, products undergo rigorous inspection by a dedicated quality control department. The following is our production process:        

1. Blanking-choose materials according to customer requirements.
2. Forging-Forging is mainly to increase the density of the material.
3 .Annealing-to lower the temperature for processing.
4 .Finishing ---- mainly processing materials.
5 .Inspection ---- Inspect whether the product is consistent with the drawing sample.
6.Quenching ---- Improve the hardness of molded products and materials.
7 .Annealing-In order to increase the wear resistance of the product, it must be annealed for a long time to prevent the blade from breaking
8 .Tempering-mainly the parallelism of the tempering products for processing.
9 .Rough grinding ---- rough grinding the surface of the product.
10.Precision grinding ---- Super-precision grinding and mirror grinding to improve the accuracy and parallelism of the product.
11. Inspection-Let unqualified products refuse to flow into the market.
12 .Packing ---- Pack differently according to different products.
