Optimizing Regrind Quality: Low Speed Granulator Blades & Equipment

In modern injection molding and extrusion, beside-the-press recycling has become a standard practice for cutting material costs. The success of this process, however, depends entirely on the performance of low-speed granulator blades and the equipment itself. Unlike high-speed crushers, low-speed granulators—typically operating at 25-30 RPM (or 28-300 RPM for different models)—rely on high torque and precision shearing to produce high-quality regrind. This makes them ideal for on-site, immediate plastic recycling, streamlining the closed-loop process.

Why Low Speed Demands Higher Precision?

High-speed granulation uses centrifugal force to shatter materials, but low-speed granulation requires blades to "slice" through plastics (such as PC, ABS, or glass-filled Nylon) rather than crush them. If blades are dull or made from inferior steel, they will compromise regrind quality and lead to the following issues:

Excessive Dust

Fine particles can clog filters and cause black spots in molded parts, directly affecting the final product quality.

Uneven Grain Size

This leads to inconsistent melting in the screw and barrel during subsequent processing, reducing production efficiency and product uniformity.

Heat Buildup

Excess heat degrades heat-sensitive resins, making the regrind either unusable or of low quality.

SKD-11 Steel

As the industry standard for low-speed granulator blades, it offers an excellent balance of hardness (HRC 58-60) and toughness. This makes it ideal for processing standard runners, sprues, and common plastics like PC, ABS, and nylon.

DC53 Steel

Designed for high-load applications, such as processing glass-reinforced plastics. DC53 delivers superior fatigue strength and wear resistance, preventing blade chipping—a common issue when handling abrasive, reinforced materials.

Modern low-speed granulator knives adopt a "staggered" or "scissor-cut" design, which is engineered to reduce the cutting force required for each stroke. This allows regrind to be mixed directly with virgin resin without affecting part quality.

Low Speed Design: Operating at 28-300 RPM (with typical models at 25-30 RPM) minimizes heat accumulation, preventing plastic melting and preserving regrind quality.
