Achieving Perfect Cuts: The Science of High-Quality Sheet Metal Shearing Blades

Introduction

In metal fabrication, the first cut determines the quality of your final product. Sheet metal shearing blades (also called guillotine knives) are the most important parts of any shearing machine.
  • A dull or poorly made blade not only leaves burrs but can also damage your hydraulic system.

  • At Alas Machinery, we make precision-ground blades for high-volume, accurate shearing.

Our Specialization

  • We make hydraulic shearing blades, guillotine blades, and shearing machine blades.

  • We also offer custom industrial hydraulic shear knives made to your needs.

  • Our blades use high-quality materials: 9CrSi, 6CrW2Si, Cr12MoV, H13, H13K, and LD.

  • They have a rectangular shape and hardness between HRC50 and HRC62, for clean, precise cuts with no burrs.

  • We can make blades from your drawings.

The Importance of Vacuum Heat Treatment

Every blade we make goes through a special vacuum heat treatment process. This process offers key benefits:
  • Creates a uniform internal structure and consistent hardness (HRC 55-62, depending on the material).

  • Unlike traditional hardening, it eliminates soft spots and prevents warping.

  • Ensures blades stay straight, even for lengths up to 4 meters or more.

Precision Grinding for Burr-Free Results

To get clean, square cuts, blade clearance and edge shape must be exact. Our blades are ground to a precision of ±0.02mm. This accuracy means:
  • Less friction when your guillotine shear runs.

  • Lower energy use.

  • Longer life for both the blades and your machine.

Common Blade Materials Overview

Different blade materials work for different jobs. Below are the most common types and their uses:

Alloy Tool Steels

  • 9CrSi: High hardness, wear resistance, and good value. Use for thin cold-rolled sheet, galvanized sheet, aluminum, copper, plastic, and leather.

  • 6CrW2Si: Contains tungsten for strong heat resistance and wear. Use for hot-shearing materials, light stainless steel, and medium-strength steel.

High-Carbon High-Chromium Steels

  • Cr12MoV/SKD-11: Great wear resistance and hardening ability. Use for stainless steel, silicon steel, high-strength steel, low-carbon steel (all thicknesses), Q235, aluminum, and copper.

  • Cr12Mo1V1/D2: High strength, wear resistance, and chip resistance. Use for medium-low hardness plates (Q195/Q235/45# steel, 40Cr), aluminum/copper/brass, plastic, rubber, paper, and composites.

Hot-Work Die Steel

  • H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1): Strong at high temperatures and resists fatigue. Use for hot-sheared hot-rolled plate, iron plate, medium-heavy plate, scrap metal, hot-sheared strip steel, and thick stainless steel.

Cold-Work Die Steel

  • LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si): High strength, toughness, and wear resistance. Use for high-strength steel, thick plate, stainless steel, and hard-to-shear metals (for large hydraulic and heavy CNC shears).

High-End Alloy Tool Steel

  • Powder Metallurgy Steel: Ultra-high hardness and long life. Use for high-end composite plate, wear-resistant steel, and high-precision shearing (for extreme wear resistance needs).

Detailed Material Characteristics

9CrSi Alloy Tool Steel

  • Features: High hardness, good wear resistance, balanced performance, good value, widely used

  • Hardness: HRC58–60 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Thin cold-rolled sheet, galvanized sheet, aluminum, copper, plastic, leather

6CrW2Si Alloy Tool Steel

  • Features: Has tungsten and silicon; heat-resistant, harder and stronger than 9CrSi; better toughness

  • Hardness: HRC60–62 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Hot-shearing, light stainless steel, medium-strength steel

Cr12MoV / SKD11 High-Carbon High-Chromium Steel

  • Features: Great wear resistance and hardening; little distortion after heat treatment; long life

  • Hardness: HRC58–60 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Low-carbon steel (all thicknesses), Q235, aluminum, copper

H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) Hot-Work Die Steel

  • Features: Strong at high temperatures; resists impact and fatigue; stays hard in heat

  • Hardness: HRC50–55 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Hot-sheared strip steel, thick plate, high-strength alloy steel, thick stainless steel

D2 (ASTM Standard)

  • Features: Much better wear resistance than regular alloy steel; resists deformation and chipping

  • Hardness: HRC58–62 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: Medium-low hardness plates, aluminum/copper/brass, plastic, rubber, paper, composites

LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si) Cold-Work Die Steel

  • Features: High strength and toughness; vanadium and molybdenum make it strong and wear-resistant

  • Hardness: HRC58–62 (after heat treatment)

  • Uses: High-strength steel, thick plate, stainless steel, hard-to-shear metals (large shears)

Powder Metallurgy Steel (e.g. ASP23, ASP60)

  • Features: Made by powder process; ultra-hard (HRC62–65+); long life; stable performance

  • Uses: High-precision shearing, jobs needing extreme wear resistance and long life

Quick Guide for Material Selection

Choose the right material based on what you’re cutting:
  • Ordinary carbon steel (Q195, Q235): 9CrSi or Cr12MoV (good value for basic needs)

  • Medium-low hardness steel / aluminum & copper (45# steel, 40Cr): SKD11 or D2 (wear-resistant, long life)

  • Light stainless steel & medium-strength steel: SKD11 or D2 (balanced performance)

  • Thick stainless steel / high-strength steel: H13 or LD (strong and tough)

  • Hot-shearing (strip steel, thick plate): H13 or H13K (heat-resistant, resists fatigue)

  • High-precision / heavy-duty use: Powder metallurgy steel (ASP23/ASP60) (max precision and life)

Customization and Compatibility

  • We make replacement blades for Amada, LVD, Accurpress, and custom machines.

  • We offer different hole patterns, T-slots, and edge types (4-edge or 2-edge) to fit your needs.

Our Advantages

  • Alas technical support to solve your problems

  • Less chipping and breakage

  • Smart value for your money

  • Engineered for good performance

  • Cost-effective

  • Lower total cost of ownership (TCO)

  • Precision that works for production

Important Notes

  • Harder is not always better. Balance hardness and toughness: too hard = chipping; too soft = dulling.

  • Heat treatment matters. Good materials need professional quenching and tempering to work well.

  • Sticky materials (stainless steel, aluminum, copper): Use Cr12MoV / SKD11 to prevent sticking and chipping.

Conclusion

Don’t settle for poor cutting quality. Choose industrial-grade blades from Alas Machinery—made with good materials and precision engineering. Contact our technical team today for a custom quote.
