Common Blade Materials & Hardness

Alloy Tool Steel

  • 9CrSi: High hardness, wear-resistant, good value; HRC 58–62; for thin cold-rolled plate, galvanized plate, aluminum, copper, plastic, leather.

  • 6CrW2Si: Contains tungsten, heat-resistant, wear-resistant; HRC 60–62; for hot shearing, light stainless steel, medium-strength steel.

High-Carbon High-Chromium Steel

  • Cr12MoV / SKD-11: Wear-resistant, easy to harden; HRC 58–62; for stainless steel, silicon steel, low-carbon steel, Q235, aluminum, copper.

  • Cr12Mo1V1 / D2: High strength, wear-resistant, not easy to break; HRC 58–62; for stainless steel, high-strength steel, Q195/Q235/45# steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, rubber.

Hot-Work Die Steel

  • H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1): Heat-resistant, strong at high temperatures; HRC 50–55; for hot-sheared plates, thick plates, scrap metal, high-strength alloy steel.

Cold-Work Die Steel

  • LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si): High strength, tough, wear-resistant; HRC 58–62; for high-strength steel, thick plates, hard-to-shear metals (large hydraulic shears).

How to Choose the Right Blade Material

  • Ordinary carbon steel (Q195, Q235): 9CrSi or Cr12MoV (good value)

  • Medium-low hardness steel, aluminum, copper (45#, 40Cr): SKD11 or D2 (long-lasting)

  • Light stainless steel, medium-strength steel: SKD11 or D2 (stable cutting)

  • Thick stainless steel, high-strength steel: H13 or LD (tough, not easy to break)

  • Hot shearing, high-temperature work: H13 or H13K (heat-resistant)

Important Tips

  • Balance hardness and toughness: Too hard = easy to break; too soft = easy to dull. Choose based on your material and workload.

  • Heat treatment matters: Good materials need professional heat treatment to work well.

  • Sticky materials (stainless steel, aluminum, copper): Choose Cr12MoV or SKD11 to prevent sticking and breaking.

ALAS shearing machine blade FAQ

1. For cutting stainless steel, which material is less likely to edge chipping: Cr12MoV or H13?

Answer: H13 is far better and more resistant to edge chipping. Cr12MoV features high hardness and wear resistance but lower toughness, easy to chip when cutting thick stainless steel or material with impurities. H13 owns excellent toughness, impact resistance and red hardness, ideal for thick stainless steel, high-strength plate and material with welding scars.

2. What is the recommended HRC hardness after heat treatment? Is the hardness consistent across the whole blade?

Answer: - Cr12MoV: Recommended HRC 58–62- H13: Recommended HRC 52–555Standard blades are fully quenched with uniform hardness ±1HRC across the entire blade.

3. What are the straightness and parallelism tolerance?

Answer: - Straightness: ≤0.02mm/m, full length ≤0.03mm - Parallelism: ≤0.03mm/m, full length ≤0.05mm

4. For [Brand] shearing machine, can standard blades be replaced directly or need customized drawing production?

Answer: To ensure absolute safety and perfect fit without any errors, drawing is required for all blade replacements, regardless of whether the blade is standard size or for old/non-standard models. Please provide your blade drawing or physical size photos for customization and installation confirmation.

5. If raw material occasionally contains welding scars or impurities, which blade material has better impact resistance?

Answer: H13 has much higher toughness and impact resistance than Cr12MoV, effectively avoiding edge chipping when hitting hard spots, welding scars and impurities.

6. What is the optimal shear clearance formula for different plate thicknesses?

Answer: Universal formula: Clearance = Plate Thickness × Clearance Coefficient- Mild steel (Q235/SPCC): 5%–8% of plate thickness - Stainless steel (304/316): 7%–10% of plate thickness - High carbon / high strength steel: 10%–14% of plate thickness

7. Is blade regrinding difficult after edge wear? How much thickness will be reduced per regrinding?

Answer: Regrinding difficulty is moderate with surface grinder and diamond wheel required. One regrinding reduces blade thickness by 0.3–0.5mm; normally 3–5 times regrinding is available.

8. What is the tiered price for purchasing more than 5 sets at one time?

9. Can ALAS provide material certificate and hardness test report?

Answer: Yes. We can provide chemical composition material test report, HRC hardness inspection report and factory certification for each batch, supporting third-party re-inspection.

10. What is the compensation policy if edge chipping occurs right after installation due to non-human factors such as heat treatment internal crack?

Answer: For quality problems caused by non-human factors (heat treatment crack, material defect, processing error), we provide free replacement and bear round-trip freight. You only need to provide photos/videos within 7 days after receiving goods for confirmation, and we will arrange replacement within 48 hours.
