It is common for purchasing managers to confuse custom roll forming post-shearing blades with standard shear blades. While both are engineered for cutting metal sheets, their edge geometries, cutting mechanisms, and shop-floor applications are completely different. They are not interchangeable.
Feature | Roll Forming Post-Shearing Blade | Standard Shear Blade |
|---|---|---|
Edge Geometry | Corrugated Profiling: Custom-ground to match the specific wave shape (ribs and valleys) of the formed panel. | Straight Edge: Perfectly linear and flat cutting edge on both upper and lower blades. |
Target Material | Formed Profiles: Roll-formed steel sheets, such as trapezoidal cladding, corrugated panels, or step tiles. | Flat Sheets: Unformed, flat metal sheets or coils of various gauges. |
Cutting Mechanism | Profile-Meshing: The upper blade profile locks into the lower blade cavity, shearing all ribs simultaneously to prevent profile collapsing. | Guillotine / Scissor Action: The blade penetrates the flat sheet along a single linear stroke path. |
Bevel Angle | Acute Angle: Ground at an acute relief angle to compensate for the curved stroke path, reducing friction and tool chipping. | 90° Square Edge: Four-edge usable straight cutting edge design requiring no complex angular compensation. |
Drive & Integration | Hydraulic Station / Inline: Synced with the roll former’s PLC for automatic, inline, cut-to-length operation. | Independent Drive: Standalone mechanical or hydraulic machinery, operated manually or with an external feeder. |
Workstation Setup | Inline Attachment: Mounted directly at the exit end of the roll forming line as a functional component of the mill. | Standalone Machine: Placed independently on the shop floor for raw sheet blanking and preparation. |
Straight Blades Destroy Formed Profiles: Standard flat shear blades cannot be used to cut roll-formed panels. Because a straight blade lacks the matching wave profiling, forcing it down onto a formed profile will instantly collapse the rib geometry, tear the sheet edges, and cause cataclysmic chipping of the tool steel.
Tailored Matching; Profiles Are Non-Interchangeable: Roll forming shear blades are strictly application-specific. Standard profiles (such as 840, 900, or 750 models) have completely different wave heights and pitches. The blade profile must strictly match the physical geometry of the finished panel; mismatching profiles will fail to engage.
Regrinding Limits & Thermal Control: Worn Post-Shearing Blades can be removed for light dressing with a surface grinder or manual oilstone. However, regrinding must preserve the precise corrugated profile and the original acute relief angle. Excessive or uneven grinding distorts the matching geometries, leading to improper blade clearance, heavy edge burrs, and material jamming.
