Why High-Precision CNC Press Brake Tooling & Segmented Bending Dies Drive Sheet Metal Success

Press brake tooling is custom forming die for bending machines, and it is a key part for sheet metal bending work. It mainly consists of upper die and lower die. When metal sheets are pressed between the two dies, they can be bent into standard 90° angles, U-shapes, V-shapes and other required forms. These tools are widely used in machinery manufacturing, sheet metal processing, hardware production and cabinet making.

Structure & Working Principle

Upper Die

It is fitted on the moving part of the bending machine to apply pressure. It comes in straight, sharp, gooseneck, arc and other styles, which decide the final outline of bent parts.

Lower Die

It is fixed on the machine table to hold metal sheets. Most lower dies are made with V-shaped grooves. The width of the groove directly affects bending force, bend radius and forming quality.
Working Steps
  1. Place the metal sheet on the lower die.

  2. The upper die moves down and presses the sheet.

  3. The sheet bends to fit the die shape.

  4. The upper die rises after bending is done.

  5. Take off the finished workpiece.

High-Performance Material & Heat Treatment

For CNC bending work, tool precision matters a lot. Even a 0.02mm difference in tool height will cause uneven bends, material waste and work delay. At Alas Machinery, we combine digital control with reliable field precision.
Many ordinary tools only use surface hardening. They easily deform under heavy pressure, and the R-angle will collapse after long use. We adopt premium 42CrMo steel, which matches AISI 4140 and SCM440 standards. All our tools go through full-body vacuum heat treatment.
  • Steady hardness across the whole tool: HRC 47–52

  • R-angle stays intact under high bending pressure

  • Consistent dimensions for every set of dies

Segmented CNC Tooling

Our segmented dies are made in standard sizes: 835mm, 415mm and other small sections. Every piece is finely ground with tolerance within ±0.01mm.
  • Sections from different batches can be used together freely

  • No extra shims needed during installation

  • No uneven joints on long bending work

  • Great straightness for the full working length

Key Features of Our Press Brake Tooling

  • High strength and wear resistance: Made of heat-treated alloy steel with hardness from HRC 45 to HRC 50. It stands up to heavy pressure and friction during continuous bending.

  • Flexible custom shapes: Punches can be made into arc, gooseneck or special profiles. Lower dies can be designed with different V-groove sizes and custom structures.

  • Good compatibility: Standard size, height and mounting style fit most bending machines, ensuring accurate bending and high product yield.

  • Standard & custom options: Standard tools fit Amada, Trumpf, Wila and other mainstream brands. We also make custom tools to meet special production needs.

Common Types of Press Brake Tooling

By Shape

  • Standard straight dies: For regular bending jobs

  • Sharp angle dies: For narrow angles and springback adjustment

  • Gooseneck dies: For U-shaped parts and deep groove workpieces

  • Arc dies: For round and curved bends

  • Special irregular dies: For custom-shaped work

By Working Material

  • Standard dies: For mild steel and galvanized steel

  • High-strength dies: For stainless steel and high-tensile plates

  • Thin-sheet dies: Prevent surface scratches and material distortion on thin metal

By Machine Mount Type

  • Amada / Promecam type

  • Trumpf / Wila type

  • New Standard type for most local bending machines

How to Pick the Right Press Brake Tooling

  1. Match the workpiece materialMild steel has minor springback. Stainless steel and high-strength steel have obvious springback, so matched special tooling is required.
  2. Follow the 8x rule for V-groove width
  • Standard use: V-groove width = 8 × sheet thickness

  • Sheets below 3mm thick: V-groove width = 6 × sheet thickness

  • Sheets over 8mm thick: V-groove width = 10 to 12 × sheet thickness

  1. Check machine tonnageDo not exceed the maximum load of machines and tools. Keep a 10% to 15% safety margin during operation.
  2. Choose suitable punch shapeSelect punch style according to part design. Use gooseneck or arc punches for special bending shapes.
  3. Check machine compatibilityConfirm tool holder type, tool height and machine stroke to ensure safe and correct installation.

Important Notes

  • Always consider material springback to avoid angle errors.

  • Follow the V-groove width rule to prevent sheet cracking and tool damage.

  • Check compatibility with your bending machine before use.

Universal Fit for Mainstream Machines

Our tooling works well with Amada/Promecam, Trumpf/Wila and New Standard type bending machines.

Frequently Asked Questions: CNC Press Brake Tooling & Segmented Bending Dies

Why is 42CrMo the industry standard for premium CNC press brake tooling?

42CrMo alloy steel is equivalent to AISI 4140, SCM440. This material delivers great fatigue strength and impact resistance, so it can hold up under extreme working loads and avoid sudden cracks. After thorough hardening, the working radii will not deform or collapse, even after years of non-stop operation.

What is the difference between full-body vacuum hardening and surface induction hardening?

Surface induction hardening only treats the outer layer of the steel, with a hardened depth of just 1 to 3 millimeters. The inner part remains soft, which makes the tool prone to bending or sagging under heavy loads.
We apply full-body vacuum heat treatment to all our press brake tools. The hardness reaches HRC 47–52 across the entire tool, from surface to core. This process relieves internal stress and keeps the dimensions accurate for long-term use.

How do ALAS segmented bending dies achieve a seamless bend line without manual shimming?

Every segment of our bending dies is precision ground, with a tight tolerance of ±0.01mm. All punch sections and V-dies run in perfect parallel. You can combine parts from different production runs freely, with no height difference between segments. There is no need to add shims manually anymore.

What are the consequences of using precision tooling on a machine with a misaligned backgauge?

Even top-grade press brake tools cannot make up for a poorly adjusted backgauge. If the backgauge stops are out of position or not calibrated correctly, metal sheets cannot sit evenly on the tooling. This will cause tapered bending angles, uneven flanges, and lead to abnormal wear on local areas of the dies.

How to choose the right V-die opening for different sheet thicknesses?

Here is the practical rule for mild steel:
  • For sheets thinner than 3mm: set V-groove width to 6 to 8 times the sheet thickness

  • For sheets between 3mm and 8mm: set V-groove width to 8 to 10 times the sheet thickness

  • For sheets thicker than 8mm: set V-groove width to 10 to 12 times the sheet thickness

A properly sized V opening cuts down bending resistance and prevents the dies from cracking under excessive stress.

What is the ideal solution for severe material springback?

Stainless steel and high-tensile metal will spring back heavily after bending. To get an accurate 90-degree bend, we produce custom segmented dies with acute angles, such as 30° and 45°. The machine can over-bend the material properly, and the finished part will rebound exactly to the target shape.

How do leading brake press tooling suppliers ensure tool interchangeability for international buyers?

As an experienced brake press tooling supplier, ALAS fully complies with global precision manufacturing standards. We use unified production drawings, professional CNC grinding equipment and strict quality checks to maintain ±0.01mm tolerance on all products. Our replacement die segments fit Amada, Trumpf, Wila and other mainstream tool systems perfectly, with no size gaps or height errors.

What to check when choosing reliable brake press tooling suppliers?

When sourcing press brake tooling, first confirm the raw material. Stick to manufacturers that use genuine 42CrMo/42CrMo4 steel. Check the heat treatment process as well — full-body vacuum hardening works far better than simple surface hardening. Reliable suppliers also offer OEM custom services based on your drawings.
For overseas shipments, good suppliers pack all tools with solid wooden cases for sea transport. This protects the tools from rust and edge damage during transit, so they are ready for heavy-duty production right after delivery.
