  • H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1)
    • Type: Hot Work Die Steel

    • Key Features: Good high-temperature strength and resistance to heat fatigue

    • Uses: Cutting hot-rolled plates, iron plates, scrap metal, thick stainless steel, and high-strength alloy steel

  • LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si)
    • Type: Cold Work Die Steel

    • Key Features: High strength, toughness, wear resistance, and not easy to chip

    • Uses: Cutting high-strength steel, stainless steel, thick plates, and hard-to-cut metals (for large hydraulic and CNC shears)

2. Blade Material Selection Guide

2.1 H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) Hot Work Tool Steel

  • Performance: Hardness HRC52-55 after heat treatment; resists impact and high-temperature softening; tough and easy to harden

  • Suitable for: Alligator shears ≥160T; cutting ultra-thick steel plates (≥30mm), high-hardness round steel, thick-walled welded pipes

  • Advantages: Good for heavy impact; prevents chipping/breakage; easy to use; mature production process

2.2 H13K Modified H13 Hot Work Tool Steel

  • Performance: Upgraded from H13; retains impact resistance, better toughness, high-temperature stability, and fatigue resistance

  • Suitable for: Ultra-large shears ≥180T; cutting extra-thick steel plates (≥40mm), heavy alloy steel, thick-walled seamless pipes, large structural steel

  • Advantages: More durable than H13; 20%-30% longer service life; best for ultra-large shears

2.3 LD Steel (7Cr7Mo2V2Si) Cold Work Tool Steel

  • Performance: Hardness HRC60-64 after heat treatment; very wear-resistant; uniform hardness; tough core

  • Suitable for: Medium-large shears 100T-160T; cutting 10-30mm steel plates, thick rebar, rusty scrap steel, angle steel/channel steel

  • Advantages: Most wear-resistant; reduces blade replacement; improves work efficiency

3. Strengthening Process

Good performance depends on proper heat treatment and surface strengthening. Poor processing can cut blade life by half or more.

3.1 Basic Heat Treatment Steps

  1. Use vacuum heat treatment (instead of ordinary air quenching) to avoid surface oxidation and ensure uniform hardness.

  2. Temper at 180-220℃ after quenching to reduce internal stress, prevent deformation/cracking, and stabilize hardness and toughness.

4. Material Selection Tips

  • Most alligator shear blades use H13 material.

  • Use H13K if scrap has complex components.

  • Contact the manufacturer for higher performance needs.
