Core Working Principle & Chamber Mechanics

Pre-assembled intermeshing double shaft solid waste shredder blade stack mounted inside the cutting chamber.

Counter-Rotating High-Torque Intermesh: Twin drive shafts rotate counter-synchronously at low speeds (5.5–15 RPM). Heavy-duty claws are arranged in a staggered, spiral array. This configuration delivers continuous, high-torque shearing force directly to the waste feed, minimizing material slippage and chamber bridging of bulky MSW.

Rotational Backlash Control: Inner hex and spline profiles are rough-cut by CNC wire-EDM and finish broached or shaved to achieve true ISO H7 clearance fits. This combined machining process ensures precise 120° corner geometry and eliminates wire-discharge rounding flakes, preventing point-contact stress concentration and corner slippage during reverse loads.

Targeted Keyed Fit Standard: For traditional keyed interfaces, the seats are wire-cut to ISO H9 tolerances to properly accommodate existing onsite shaft wear and facilitate smooth workshop changeouts.

Thermal Expansion Margin: All H7/H9 engineering limits are carefully balanced against your actual worn shaft profiles (e.g., h7/h9 clearances). This deliberate engineered safety margin ensures the assembly absorbs the extreme thermal expansion generated during continuous 24/7 shredding, eliminating the risk of the knives binding or heat-seizing onto the shaft.

Modular Fastener-Protected Architecture: Features a segmented layout comprising a high-toughness alloy body, bolted replaceable claw edges, and auxiliary wear plates. All high-tensile locking bolts are deeply recessed inside precision CNC-counterbored channels. This shields the fastener heads from direct abrasive grit erosion, allowing your workshop crew to perform rapid individual tooth swap-outs directly on the shaft to cut maintenance downtime.

Custom Specs & Sharp Engineering Tolerances

Micro-Flatness & Anti-Wrapping Control:

Face flatness is controlled strictly to ≤ 0.03 mm/m (or ≤ 0.02 mm over a 300 mm radius), with parallelism locked under ≤ 0.03 mm. This side clearance stabilizes the horizontal knife-to-knife gap, preventing flexible plastic films, agricultural mulches, and textiles from slipping into side spaces, rubbing, and causing friction-induced motor stalls.

Stack Build-Up Control: Single blade thickness tolerance is tracked at ± 0.05 mm. To prevent a 24-knife batch from building a massive stack deviation that binds the chamber, ALAS pre-assembles every batch at the factory using 0.01–0.02 mm graded precision micrometer assembly shims to control stack build-up within the specified functional tolerance before crating.

Thickness Profiles vs. Waste Application:

  • 15 – 25 mm: Optimized for high-velocity shearing of flexible thin packaging films, fibers, and textiles.

  • 30 – 50 mm: Standard heavy-duty thickness for e-waste, dense polymers, and passenger car tire recycling.

  • 50 – 100 mm: Heavy-gauge configuration engineered to crush construction & demolition (C&D) debris, bulky metals, and timber logs.

Industrial Material Selection

6CrW2Si / Graded H13: H13 tool steel is optimized for heavy-impact environments and tempered strictly within the standard 48–52 HRC range to preserve extreme core toughness and prevent tooth snapping under shock loads.

AISI D2 / Cr12MoV (58–60 HRC): Standard cold-work matrix steel delivering excellent cost-per-ton value against typical abrasive plastics and polymers.

DC53 Matrix Steel (58–61 HRC): Premium upgraded alloy utilizing specific high-temperature tempering to lock in exceptional abrasion resistance and enhanced edge-holding wear-life compared to basic D2.

High-Manganese Steel: Commences at 200–220 HBW and dynamically work-hardens under continuous kinetic shock up to 50–55 HRC, engineered specifically for municipal solid waste with massive sand and soil contamination.

Wear Maintenance & Optimization

Regrinds & Grinding: Engineered with deep stock margins to support up to 4 professional regrinds. Flood coolant must be constantly flooded during resharpening to prevent thermal annealing and localized micro-softening.

Clearance: A weekly recommended inspection of knife-to-knife gaps is highly advised. Uncalibrated, loose clearances cause material wrapping, which can spike cutting torque and elevate motor energy consumption by 15%–30%.

Best Application

Key Advantage

Limitation

NOT Recommended

6CrW2Si / H13

48–52 HRC

MSW, RDF/SRF lines with concrete chunks, heavy steel channel impurities

Extreme impact toughness; standard ALAS tempering prevents premature cracking under multi-ton shock loads

Moderate abrasive wear resistance vs DC53/D2 series

Pure high-abrasive polymer lines without heavy metal/stone contamination

AISI D2 / Cr12MoV

58–60 HRC

Mixed plastics, rubber, e-waste with minor metal fragments

Balanced, cost-effective abrasive wear resistance for standard processing

Brittle under severe kinetic impact; prone to edge-chipping on structural steel

Heavy Construction & Demolition (C&D) debris containing massive concrete blocks

DC53 Matrix Steel

58–61 HRC

Dense polymers, fiber glass, high-velocity wire-reinforced tire recycling

Premium high-carbon chromium matrix ensures ultimate edge retention and wear life

Higher initial tooling cost; requires structured clearance maintenance

Raw, unsegregated municipal solid waste packed with heavy structural contaminants

High-Manganese Steel

High-Manganese Steel

Raw municipal waste, landfill screen rejects mixed with rocks, bricks & heavy aggregate.

Self-hardening edge. Absorbs relentless heavy kinetic shock while base metal remains highly ductile.

Requires high-impact load. Remains soft and wears out rapidly under light, pure friction.

Fine, continuous soft fiber processing or clean polymer recycling without repetitive heavy impact.

Critical Reminder: Tungsten carbide hardfacing is NOT suitable for mixed MSW/RDF lines heavily contaminated with steel channel, stone, and concrete. The hardfaced overlay is brittle and easily spalls or fractures under sudden kinetic shock, leading to catastrophic chamber jamming and unexpected shutdown.

FAQ

A: Not recommended. WC hardfacing layers are highly brittle under sharp impact from structural steel and concrete chunks. The overlay will crack and flake off, which risks jamming the shredder chamber and damaging the rotor. For contaminated waste, high-toughness H13 (48–52 HRC) or work-hardening high-manganese steel is the engineered solution.

Q: What is the technical difference between H13 and DC53 shredder knives for RDF/SRF processing lines?

A: ALAS standard H13 is tempered to 48–52 HRC, prioritizing extreme impact toughness to withstand hidden steel channel and stone fragments without cracking. DC53 is processed to 58–61 HRC, leveraging high-temperature tempering to achieve maximum abrasive wear resistance against dense polymers and fiberglass. Select H13 if your feed contains unsegregated heavy shock debris; choose DC53 for cleaner, high-abrasion polymer processing.

Q: Can you custom manufacture claw profiles to fit our existing twin-shaft shredder rotor?

A: Yes. We engineer custom claw geometries and inner bore profiles. We lock in a tight ISO H7 clearance fit for hexagonal and splined drive shafts to eliminate rotational backlash, and apply ISO H9 tolerances exclusively for keyed interfaces. Please provide your rotor drawing, shaft dimensions, and waste composition for engineering evaluation.

Q: What flatness & parallelism tolerances do you control on shredder knife faces?

A: Face flatness is held strictly to ≤ 0.03 mm/m (or ≤ 0.02 mm within a 300 mm radius). Thickness tolerance is kept at ± 0.05 mm with a parallelism error < 0.03 mm. Precision graded assembly shims (0.01–0.02 mm) are utilized at the shaft end to control stack build-up within the specified functional tolerance.

Q: How to adjust blade clearance to prevent motor stall caused by plastic film wrapping?

A: We highly advise a weekly recommended maintenance check of your knife gaps. Excessive clearance allows flexible plastic films and textiles to wrap around the rotors instead of shearing cleanly. This micro-wrapping creates tight frictional binds that can spike drive torque and raise motor energy consumption by 15%–30%.
