1. Overview

Cr12MoV is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel widely used in applications requiring high wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability. It is commonly employed in the manufacturing of cold-work dies, punches, and other precision tools.

2. Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of Cr12MoV steel includes:

Carbon (C): 1.45-1.70%

Chromium (Cr): 11.00-12.50%

Molybdenum (Mo): 0.40-0.60%

Vanadium (V): 0.15-0.30%

Silicon (Si): ≤0.40%

Manganese (Mn): ≤0.40%

These elements contribute to the steel's high hardness, wear resistance, and toughness.

Density: 7.7 g/cm³

Thermal Expansion Coefficient: 10.4 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C)

4. Mechanical Properties

Hardness: After proper heat treatment, Cr12MoV steel can achieve a hardness of 58-62 HRC.

Tensile Strength: Approximately 2000 MPa

5. Heat Treatment Process

The heat treatment process for Cr12MoV steel includes annealing, quenching, and tempering:

Annealing: Heat to 850-870°C, hold, and slowly cool to achieve a hardness of 220-240 HB.

Quenching: Heat to 980-1030°C, then cool in oil or air to achieve a hardness of 60-62 HRC.

Tempering: Temper at 180-220°C to achieve a hardness of 58-60 HRC.

6. Applications

Cr12MoV steel is primarily used in:

Cold Work Dies: Such as blanking dies, forming dies, and trimming dies.

Punches: For stamping and piercing operations.

Shear Blades: For cutting and shearing applications.

Precision Tools: For high-precision machining and tooling.
