If you’re cutting stainless steel on a guillotine shear, you already know the pain—standard blades simply don’t last.
At Nanjing Alas, we engineer heavy-duty shear blades from five proven tool steels: H13, LD, DC53, D2, and Cr12MoV (SKD11). Instead of forcing a single blade past its structural limits, we precisely match each steel grade to a specific thickness range. The result? Maximum blade life, cleaner cuts, and minimized downtime.
All Nanjing Alas blades undergo advanced vacuum heat treatment and precision tempering to achieve an optimal HRC 50–62 balance. We engineer for real-world toughness matched to the actual impact load—not just inflating hardness numbers for a spec sheet. Built to withstand the intense lateral thrust and work-hardening forces that stainless steel exerts on the cutting edge, our blades are fully compatible with Amada, Cincinnati, Peddinghaus, and most other major shear brands.
To ensure long service life and predictable maintenance, Nanjing Alas optimizes each of our five blade grades for a comfortable, reliable working range—never pushing materials to their theoretical limits. The table below maps each material to its recommended stainless and mild steel thickness ranges, helping you choose the perfect balance of performance and ROI.
Longer blade life
Fewer sharpening cycles
Less scrap
"We see it all the time — shops buy the hardest blade they can find, throw it on everything, then wonder why it chips on thick plate. You don't need the 'best' blade. You need the right blade for what you're cutting."— Senior Metallurgical Engineer, Nanjing Alas Machinery
| Material Grade | Standard Equivalents | Hardness (HRC) | Recommended Stainless Steel Thickness | Recommended Mild Carbon Steel Thickness | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| H13 | GB 4Cr5MoSiV1 / JIS SKD61 | 50–55 | 10 mm to 20 mm | 12 mm to 25 mm+ | Heavy-duty steel service centers, heavy plate fabrication, and high-impact hydraulic shears. |
| LD | GB 7Cr7Mo2V2Si | 58–62 | 5 mm to 10 mm | 6 mm to 12 mm | High-performance, medium-thick plate production with an optimal balance of wear and shock resistance. |
| DC53 | JIS DC53 (Daido) | 60–62 | 3 mm to 6 mm | 4 mm to 8 mm | High-precision heavy shearing, continuous long-run automation lines, and clean, burr-free edge requirements. |
| D2 | GB Cr12Mo1V1 / ASTM D2 | 58–62 | 1.5 mm to 4 mm | 2 mm to 6 mm | Standard metal workshops processing light-to-medium sheets with superior wear resistance. |
| Cr12MoV / SKD11 | GB Cr12MoV / JIS SKD11 | 58–60 | Under 2 mm | Under 4 mm | High-volume general shearing of thin sheets, offering the most cost-effective solution for standard materials. |
Heat treatment is where the blade actually gets its properties — and it's also where a lot of cheap manufacturers cut corners.
Preheat to 850°C
Austenitize at 1,020–1,050°C under vacuum
High-pressure gas quench
Double temper at 500–560°C
Hardness consistency — ±1 HRC through the whole blade, no soft core that bends under load
Low distortion — under 0.02 mm per meter, so your blade gap stays where you set it
Crack resistance — compressive residual stress at the surface fights crack initiation
DC53 is especially good here — its distortion after heat treat is about a third of what you get with SKD11, so it needs less post-treatment grinding and holds its dimensions better.
Too wide → heavy burrs, torn edge
Too narrow → edges rub, excessive heat, rapid dulling
Clean, burr-free cuts when set correctly
Ideal for automated lines where consistent edge quality matters
Wider gap accommodates greater material deformation
Prevents corner chipping — the #1 failure mode on thick plate
Requires high-toughness blade material to handle the impact load
All our blades are ground to ±0.01 mm flatness and ±0.005 mm thickness tolerance, so you can actually hit the gap you're aiming for across the full length of the blade.
It's reliable on under-4-mm mild steel and under-2-mm stainless, and it's the most cost-effective option for shops that mostly run standard thin materials.
| Material | Thickness (304 Stainless) | Benchmark Cuts Between Sharpenings |
|---|---|---|
| H13 | 12 mm | 4,000–5,000 |
| LD | 8 mm | 5,000–7,000 |
| DC53 | 5 mm | 6,000–8,000 |
| D2 | 3 mm | 8,000–10,000 |
| Cr12MoV / SKD11 | 1.5 mm | 10,000–12,000 |
304 / 316 austenitic stainless (high work-hardening, sticky) → life tends toward the lower end of the range
430 / 410 martensitic / ferritic stainless → slower wear, life can reach or exceed the upper end
Recommended for stainless: 8–12% of plate thickness
Too small → excessive heat + secondary shearing, life drops sharply
Too large → material tearing + burr formation, edge dulls faster
Using coolant or shearing oil reduces "micro-welding adhesive wear" between stainless and the blade edge
Good lubrication can extend blade life by 20–40%
DC53 with deep cryogenic treatment → better wear resistance, longer life
SKD11 that actually hits HRC 58–60 consistently → performs as expected
Poor heat treat (soft spots, uneven hardness) → life can be cut in half
Hydraulic shears (smooth, steady cut) → longer blade life
Mechanical shears (high impact shock) → shorter blade life due to edge chipping
