Common Blade Materials Overview
Below are common blade materials, their key traits, and what they cut best:
9CrSi (Alloy Tool Steel): Hard, wear-resistant, cost-effective. Cuts thin cold-rolled plate, galvanized plate, aluminum, copper, and non-metals (plastic, leather).
6CrW2Si (Alloy Tool Steel): Has tungsten, stays hard at high temps. Good for hot cutting, light stainless steel, and medium-strength steel.
Cr12MoV/SKD-11 (High Carbon High Chromium Steel): Wear-resistant, hardens well. Cuts stainless steel, silicon steel, high-strength steel, Q235, aluminum, and copper.
H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) (Hot Work Die Steel): Handles high temps well. Good for hot-rolled plate, thick plate, scrap metal, and thick stainless steel.
Cr12Mo1V1/D2 (High Carbon High Chromium Steel): Strong, wear-resistant. Cuts medium/low-hardness steel, aluminum, copper, and non-metals (plastic, rubber).
LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si) (Cold Work Die Steel): Tough, wear-resistant. Cuts high-strength steel, thick plate, and hard-to-cut metals (for large hydraulic/CNC shears).
Detailed Blade Material Traits
9CrSi Alloy Tool Steel
Traits: Hard, wear-resistant, balanced performance, cost-effective (most widely used). Good edge retention; fewer burrs and crooked edges.
Hardness: HRC 58–60 (after heat treatment)
Best for: Thin cold-rolled plate, galvanized plate, aluminum, copper, plastic, leather
6CrW2Si Alloy Tool Steel
Traits: Has tungsten/silicon; stays hard at high temps. Stronger than 9CrSi; better toughness. Good edge retention; no burrs/crooked edges in hot cutting.
Hardness: HRC 60–62 (after heat treatment)
Best for: Hot cutting, light stainless steel, medium-strength steel
Cr12MoV / SKD11 High Carbon High Chromium Steel
Traits: Wear-resistant, hardens well, long life. Great edge retention; smooth cuts (no burrs/crooked edges).
Hardness: HRC 58–60 (after heat treatment)
Best for: All thicknesses of low-carbon steel, Q235, aluminum, copper
H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) Hot Work Die Steel
Traits: Handles high temps well; tough, no softening/deformation. Good edge retention; no burrs/crooked edges in hot cutting.
Hardness: HRC 50–55 (after heat treatment)
Best for: Hot-rolled plate, thick plate, high-strength alloy steel, thick stainless steel
D2 (American Standard)
Traits: Very wear-resistant, hard; resists deformation. Excellent edge retention; few burrs/crooked edges for metals and non-metals.
Hardness: HRC 58–62 (after heat treatment)
Best for: Medium/low-hardness steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, rubber, composite materials
LD (7Cr7Mo2V2Si) Cold Work Die Steel
Traits: Strong, tough; has vanadium/molybdenum for fine grain. Great wear resistance and edge retention; no burrs/crooked edges on hard-to-cut materials.
Hardness: HRC 58–62 (after heat treatment)
Best for: High-strength steel, thick plate, stainless steel, large hydraulic/CNC shears
Blade Material Selection Guide
Ordinary carbon steel (Q195, Q235): Choose 9CrSi or Cr12MoV (cost-effective, meets basic needs).
Medium/low-hardness steel, aluminum/copper: Choose SKD11 or D2 (wear-resistant, long life).
Light stainless steel, medium-strength steel: Choose SKD11 or D2 (stable performance).
Thick stainless steel, high-strength steel: Choose H13 or LD (tough, resists chipping).
Hot cutting (strip steel, thick plate): Choose H13 or H13K (heat-resistant, no softening).
Important Notes
Hardness isn’t everything: Too hard = easy chipping; too soft = dulls fast. Both cause poor edge retention, burrs, and crooked edges. Choose based on your material and load.
Heat treatment matters: Good materials need professional quenching/tempering to work well.
Sticky materials (stainless steel, aluminum, copper): Choose Cr12MoV or SKD11 to prevent sticking, chipping, and poor cuts.
