Daily Maintenance and Inspection Standards for Ironworker Dies and Blades

Preface

The molds and blades of the hydraulic ironworker are the core wearable components of the equipment. Their integrity, fitting accuracy, and operating status directly determine machining precision, production stability, operating efficiency, and overall equipment service life.Standardized, periodic inspection and maintenance effectively reduce mold wear, equipment failure, oil leakage, pressure relief, and workpiece scrap. This document establishes a five-level standardized maintenance system covering daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual cycles. By clarifying key lubrication points and mandatory prohibitions, it forms a fully implementable, traceable, and reusable standard operating procedure (SOP) for industrial ironworker equipment.

1. Pre-Shift and Daily Maintenance Standards (Mandatory Every Shift)

1.1 Pre-Start Static Inspection

  • Hydraulic System: Check the hydraulic oil level. If low, top up with the same oil grade. Mixing different oil types is strictly prohibited.

  • Dies and Blades: Confirm that all punches, dies, and shearing blades are firmly secured with no looseness, surface cracks, or chipped edges.

  • Alignment Check: Visually inspect the alignment between the punch and the die. Do not adjust blade clearances without authorization.

  • Cleaning: Thoroughly clean metal chips, debris, and foreign objects from the worktable, die surfaces, and cutting edges.

  • Safety Guards: Test the emergency stop button, foot switch, and safety guards to ensure all electrical safety circuits function properly.

1.2 In-Operation Dynamic Monitoring

  • Abnormal Noise Monitoring: Listen closely to the hydraulic pump and mechanical drive system. Stop the machine immediately if unusual vibration or noise occurs.

  • Temperature Control: Monitor the oil temperature gauge. Operating temperatures must not exceed 60°C (140°F).

  • Leak Inspection: Closely inspect hydraulic line fittings, the main cylinder, and valve blocks to ensure there are no oil leaks.

  • Load Management: Workpiece dimensions must not exceed the machine's rated shearing or punching tonnage. Overload operation is strictly prohibited.

  • No-Load Warm-Up: Run the machine at low speed without load after starting each day. Allow the guide rails and bushings to warm up and lubricate fully before applying load.

1.3 Shutdown and Clean-Up

  • Complete Pressure Relief: Press the electrical pressure relief button and manually open the accumulator dump valve. Confirm that the pressure gauge reads zero.

  • Power Down: Cut off the main power supply only after all working mechanisms have come to a complete stop in their rest position.

  • Equipment Cleaning: Clear away all metal chips generated during the shift to maintain a clean machine and work environment.

  • Rust Prevention: Apply or wipe a light layer of anti-rust oil onto exposed metal surfaces of punches, lower dies, and shearing blades.

2. Weekly Maintenance Standards

  • Deep Lubrication: Apply lubricant to sliding guide rails, linkage pins, and mechanical joints (refer to Section 5).

  • Clearance Sampling Check: Inspect (do not blindly adjust) blade and die alignment and clearance. Any anomalies must be adjusted by qualified technicians.

  • Fastener Check: Check and retighten main tool post bolts, motor base mountings, and punch lock nuts.

3. Monthly System Inspection

  • Line & Fitting Review: Thoroughly check hydraulic lines for micro-leaks or aging seals caused by operational vibration.

  • Electrical Safety: Inspect connections inside the electrical enclosure, limit switches, and safety interlocks to ensure quick and reliable response.

  • Performance Assessment: Test the responsiveness of hydraulic control valves, solenoid valves, and cylinders to ensure smooth operation without sticking or lag.

4. Semi-Annual / Annual Overhaul Maintenance

⚠️ MANDATORY SAFETY WARNING & LOCKOUT/TAGOUT (LOTO) PROCEDURE:

Before performing any disassembly, overhaul, or adjustment, you must strictly execute Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Disconnect the main power supply, lock the main isolator switch with a personal safety lock, and tag it out.

Then, press the electrical pressure relief button and manually open the mechanical accumulator dump valve to completely release all residual high pressure in the hydraulic circuits. Confirm the pressure gauge reads zero before reaching into any danger zone!

  • Hydraulic Oil Management: Drain the old hydraulic oil completely and clean sludge and sediment from inside the oil tank.

    • Oil Selection Standard: Use heavy-duty, high-pressure anti-wear hydraulic oil. HM46 is recommended for general year-round use; HM68 is recommended for high-ambient-temperature environments or hot summer workshops. (Using low-viscosity HM32 on heavy-duty ironworkers is strictly forbidden, as oil film rupture under high pressure causes pump damage).

    • Environmental Compliance: Waste oil, old filter elements, and oily rags must be collected in leak-proof containers and handed over to a certified hazardous waste disposal agency.

  • Filter Element Replacement: Mandatory replacement of suction and return hydraulic oil filter elements to prevent pressure drop or hydraulic pump wear.

  • Precision Clearance Calibration: With the system completely depressurized and powered off, have qualified technicians measure and calibrate shearing blade clearances and die fit.

  • Seal Renewal: Inspect and replace hardened, deformed, or worn skeletal oil seals and O-rings.

5.2 Lubrication Principles

Strictly follow the principle of "small amounts, high frequency, as needed." Over-greasing is prohibited, as excess lubricant spills and attracts metal chips and dust—forming an abrasive paste that accelerates machine wear and contaminates workpieces.

6. Prohibited Operational Practices

  • NO OVERLOADING: Never punch or shear materials that exceed the machine’s rated capacity for thickness or hardness.

  • MATERIAL RESTRICTIONS: Do not process hardened steel, cemented carbide, or other high-hardness / brittle materials to prevent dangerous blade shattering.

  • NO SERVICING UNDER PRESSURE: Never adjust dies or reach into the cutting area unless the hydraulic system is fully depressurized and the main power is locked out.

  • NO OPERATION WITH FAULTS: Do not operate the machine if oil levels are low, oil temperature exceeds 60°C, or system alarms/abnormal noises occur.

  • NO UNAUTHORIZED PRESSURE ADJUSTMENTS: Never alter factory-set relief valve settings to avoid line bursts or permanent frame deformation.

  • NO STACKED SHEARING: Never stack thin sheets for cutting, or shear severely warped or burred plate edges. Uneven forces can displace the slide block or cause blade collisions.
